Covenant & Ground Rules

Set Free! Retreat

  • We are here to facilitate ministry to others, and for ourselves.

  • We will not attempt to “fix” one another.

  • Offensive language and/or remarks have no place in this weekend retreat.

  • Anonymity and confidentiality are basic requirements for trust, and trust is essential for ministry to be able to take place. What others share with me on this retreat stays with me.

  • I am not obligated to share anything I am not comfortable sharing.

  • What I disclose about myself is completely up to me.

If there is any reason to believe that there is any type of child abuse, we are obligated by law to report this to the appropriate government agency.

If there are any questions or concerns throughout the retreat, please speak to one of the team members.

Session One

Spiritual Warefare

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV) “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Introduction

Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Ephesians 6:11 (NLT) “Put on all of God’s armour so that you will be able to stand firm against all the strategies of the devil.”

Strategies of the Enemy

Strategy #1: Tempt you to disobey, bringing on you a curse, discipline, or judgment.

Numbers 23:8 (NIV) “How can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce those whom the Lord has not denounced?”

Proverbs 26:2 (NIV) “Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.”

Strategy #2: Build spiritual strongholds in your life to put you in bondage. 

1. Personal sin (what we do)

Ephesians 4:26–27 (NIV) “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.”

2 Corinthians 10:3–4 (NIV) “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.”

1 Samuel 15:22–23 (NKJV) “So Samuel said: ‘Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices. As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.’ ”

Text should read:
"For rebellion IS witchcraft (sorcery, divination).”

1 Samuel 16:14 (NIV) “Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.”

2. Generational sin 
  • Biblical evidence for generational sin 

Exodus 20:5 (NIV) “You shall not bow down to worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.”

Ezekiel 18:20 (NLT) “The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins.”

Romans 5:12 (NIV) “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.”

  • Ways in which generational sin affects us: 

    • We are affected by the sins our parents committed directly against us. 

    • We are affected by the consequences of our parents’ sin.

    • We are affected by the damage done in our parent’s lives.

    • We are affected by the predispositions to certain sins passed down to us. 

3. Other peoples’ sins 

Isaiah 61:1 (NIV) “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”

Weapons to Fight the Enemy 

2 Corinthians 10:3–4 (NLT) “We are human, but we don’t wage war with human plans and methods. We use God’s mighty weapons, not mere worldly weapons, to knock down the devil’s strongholds!” 

 Weapon #1: Confess sin 

1. Believers are to confess their sins 

Luke 11:4 (NIV) “Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.”

1 Corinthians 11:28–30 (NLT) “A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For if you eat the bread or drink the cup unworthily, not honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.”

2. What confession or repentance entails 
  • Repentance begins with a change of mind. 

Luke 15:17-19 (ESV) “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here’.”

2 Corinthians 7:10 (ESV) “For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”

  •  Repentance includes a change of direction and behavior. 

Luke 3:8 (ESV)Bear fruits in keeping with repentance.”  

3. Benefits of confession to God and others 
  • It brings forgiveness. 

1 John 1:9 (NIV)If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 

  • It limits discipline.

  • It releases healing (inner and outer) and sets us free! 

James 5:16 (NIV)Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

  • It breaks our pride.

  • It solidifies the decision.

  • It solicits prayer help.

  • It encourages other to confess also.

  • It brings accountability. 

Weapon #2: Deliverance 

Ephesians 2:6 “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus…”

Session Two

Destructive Habits, Attitudes, & Actions

Galatians 5:16 “…live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

Introduction

Galatians 5:19–21 “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.”

Galatians 5:16 “…live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”

Rebellion

Session Three

From Impure to Pure

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Introduction

Sex and sexuality were created by God and given to us as a gift to be kept pure and holy.

Why it matters that sex remains between 1 man and 1 woman in marriage

First: Biblical marriage was designed to produce godly offspring for God

Genesis 2:24 (ESV) “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Malachi 2:15 (NIV) “And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.”

Second: Biblical marriage pictures the ‘plurality in unity’ found in the triune God

Genesis 1:27 (NIV) “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Third: Biblical marriage pictures how Christ loves the Church and how we are to submit to Him

1 Corinthians 11:7 (NIV) “A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.”

Ephesians 5:25-28 (NIV84) Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

Ephesians 5:24 (NIV84) “Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”

Fourth: Biblical marriage pictures the joy and pleasures to be found in a relationship with God

Proverbs 5:18-19 (ESV) “Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.”

Jesus calls us to purity so that we can experience peace with God, ourselves, and others

Leviticus 20:7 “Be holy, because I am the LORD your God.”

Psalm 101:3 “I will set before my eyes no vile thing.”

Philippians 4:8-9 “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things … And the God of PEACE will be with you.”

  • When we think and live righteously, we experience peace with each other and with God.

Satan’s Lies

Lie #1: I was born this way

  • This lie is really convincing because it is TRUE. We are ALL born with a sin nature. However, this does NOT mean that we have a license to sin.

Lie #2: I must experience sin so that I can understand and reach others

Romans 16:19 … I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.

Ephesians 5:3 “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.”

Soul Ties

1 Corinthians 6:16(NIV) “Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, ‘The two will become one flesh.’”

Unhealthy soul ties:

  1. Ongoing emotional ties between a mother and grown son – e.g. mama’s boy

  2. An emotional tie to someone you fantasize about (called emotional adultery).

  3. Ties created by inappropriate touching, petting, oral sex or mutual masturbation

  4. Ties created by sexual abuse or sexual union with an animal.

  5. Ties still in place with a spouse who passed away or between divorced people.

Session Four

The Cross

John 10:17-18 “for this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord, I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again...”

Introduction

Isaiah 53:3–11 (NLT) “He was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way when he went by. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God for his own sins! But he was wounded and crushed for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace. He was whipped, and we were healed! All of us have strayed away like sheep. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the guilt and sins of us all. He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led as a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. From prison and trial they led him away to his death. But who among the people realized that he was dying for their sins — that he was suffering their punishment? He had done no wrong, and he never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave. But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and fill him with grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have a multitude of children, many heirs. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s plan will prosper in his hands. When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of what he has experienced, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.”

Purpose of Jesus’ Death

A. The Father Ordained Jesus’ suffering.

Romans 8:32 “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”

B. The Son Embraced His suffering.

Matthew 26:39 “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I wish, but as you will.”

Luke 22:43-44 “and there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” (NIV)

Benefits of His suffering

  1. Salvation from hell.

  2. Forgiveness of sin.

  3. Removal of guilt.

  4. Deliverance from bondages.

  5. Healing of inner hurts.

  6. Restoration of relationship with God.

  7. Restoration of relationship with others.

  8. Victory over the devil.

  9. Presence of God.

  10. Desire to do God’s will.

  11. Power to do God’s will.

  12. Peace

  13. Joy

  14. Love

  15. Hope

Matthew 27: 41-42 The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! So he is the King of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in him!” (NLT)

Colossians 2:14-15 “He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.”

Hebrews 10:26, 29 (NLT) “Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins…Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us.”

Session Five

From a Divided to a Single Heart

James 4:7–8 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

Introduction

2 Kings 17:41 “Even while these people were worshiping the LORD, they were serving their idols.”

Deuteronomy 18:10–12 (NLT) “Never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling or sorcery, or allow them to interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, 11 or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is an object of horror and disgust to the LORD.”

Matthew 24:24 (NIV) “For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect — if that were possible.”

2 Corinthians 11:14 (NIV) “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”

Acts 19:19 (NLT) “A number of them who had been practicing magic brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars.”

Session Six

Inner Healing

Psalms 34:18 “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

A. Confess your Unforgiveness

1. Forgive Others

Mark 11:25-26 (NKJV) “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against any one, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses”

Luke 6:27–28 (NIV) “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

2. Forgive Yourself

1 Corinthians 15:9 (NLT) “I am the least of all the apostles, and I am not worthy to be called an apostle after the way I persecuted the church of God.”

Philippians 3:13–14 (NLT) “…I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.”

3. Confess Offense Towards God

Job 1:22 (NIV) “In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.”

B. Invite Jesus to speak truth into your woundedness

What has been said or done against me

PART A – Someone Offended You

STEPS TO FREEDOM:
  1. Write down the name of person who has wronged you.

  2. Write down the memory of the offense or event.

  3. Write down how that person/offense/event made you feel.

  4. Ask Jesus to reveal the lie you believed in the memory.

  5. Ask Jesus to speak truth into the memory.

  6. Confess the sin of unforgiveness, if necessary.

  7. Forgive the person(s) and pray a prayer of blessing on them.

PART B – Issue/Feeling You Are Struggling With

STEPS TO FREEDOM:
  1. Write down the problem/struggle/wrong feeling you are dealing with.

  2. Write down the memory where that problem/struggle/feeling started.

  3. Write down how the event made you feel.

  4. Ask Jesus to reveal the lie you believed in the memory.

  5. Ask Jesus to speak truth into the memory.

  6. Confess the sin of unforgiveness, if necessary.

  7. Forgive person(s) involved in that memory and pray a blessing on them.

Session Seven

Holy Spirit

Ephesians 3:16-17 “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.”

Lasting Freedom

Matthew 12:43-45 (NLT) “When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none. Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order. Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before. That will be the experience of this evil generation.”

Practicum

Holy Spirit

A. Who is the Holy Spirit?

  1. The Holy Spirit has been ignored and misunderstood.

  2. He is a person!

    • He thinks

B. What does the Spirit do?

  1. Births us into God’s family

  2. Gives us access to the Father

A Healing Pattern

Confession

**Done by the one receiving ministry**

PERSONAL SIN: Heavenly Father, I confess (name sin) as my sin. I repent of it and I ask you to forgive me.

Generational Bondage: In the name of Jesus, I break all generational bondages and curses of (name bondage, sin or curse) that are in my family lines, and that were passed on to me and were passed down to my children (if applicable).

Session #2 – Curses/Vows: In the name of Jesus, I break the vow/curse of (name curse), that I made against myself. I declare it null and void in the name of Jesus.

Session # 3 – Soul Ties: (any sexual act outside of marriage): In the name of Jesus, I break the soul tie between me and (first name of sexual partner). I sever that link supernaturally and ask God to remove all influences of the other person and make me whole again.


Deliverance

**Done by the person ministering**

BREAK BONDAGES & CAST AWAY: In the name of Jesus, I cut you free from all attachments to (name sin) and I cast away every spirit of (name of sin).


Listening Prayer

**At the end of each session – pray the following for each other**

God’s word promises that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Do you receive God’s forgiveness? (1 John 1:9)
